William Donnelly's Bar London Road 1960s

William Donnelly. 1960s.

There has been licensed premises here since at least the 1850s, it was then owned by a wine & spirit merchant called Robert McIssac. In the 1870s Bowman Miller another spirit merchant occupied the premises, it wasn't until the 1880s that new premises were built and a new landlord by the name of William Holme Parker acquired the premises. He also ran a pub a 155 Graeme Street which became Bell Street. The pub sat at the corner of St. John's Place next to St. John's Church.

The pub sat at the intersects of Craignestock Place and London Road.

William and his family stayed at 65 Great Hamilton Street.

When William died his wife Margaret C Parker took control of the business and continued to do so until the First World War, by then the pub on Graeham Street had been closed down. Margaret was then living at 8 Morris Place.

There was a Newsagents come stationary shop across the road from the pub run by William Parker possibly a family member.

During the 1930s John Beaton Parker a well-known wine & spirit merchant was running this popular east end pub, he served the locals here for many years. The pub was taken over by Denis McEneny who ran the business during the 50s and 60s and was one of the last license holders before the pub was demolished in the 60s which saw many of the pubs disappear overnight.

End.
