This old Pub was established in 1876 by renowned Wine & Spirit merchant Gilbert S Reid. Mr Reid also ran pubs in Govan Street (Ballater Street) at the corner of South Wellington Street (Lawmoor Street) and a pub on London Road at the corner of Maurdant Street.
In 1899 Mr Reid had a rent of £46.00 to pay ever year for the premises. During the First World War Barbara Reid was licensee, she acted as of the trustees after Mr Reid's death. During war times it wasn't unusual for women to run pubs as all the men were out fighting for their Country.
Another well known publican to run this old pub was Irishman Peter McCrudden who owned the pub in the 1930s, he renamed the pub "The Barnsmore" he was succeeded by Robert McKay who ran the pub in the 1940s, his wife Isabella McKay continued to run this popular bar until the 1970s.
This photograph was taken in 1956 to celebrate the fund raising for the Scottish Spastic Children. The pile of pennies raised £60 10/-, to help break up the pennies was Rangers and Celtic footballers Ian McColl and Sean Fallon with them in the centre of the photograph is Mrs Isabella McKay the proprietor, Other in the picture are Mr J Black, director of Eastbank Home for the Infirm Children and nurse Jeanie McMillan.
Another charity photograph this was taken in 1960. In the photograph is Larry Marshall of S T V's One O'Clock Gang who broke up the pile of pennies. The effort was on behalf of East bank Home which raised £57.00. Left to right Mr S Colum, the head barman, Mrs Isabella McKay the proprietor, Lenny Marshall, sister Potts and Mr J Black.
