Govan Street had 14 Pubs (Ballater Street) in 1899...

At number 18 Govan Street, Robert Wilson owned the pub, many will still remember this old pub as the Hamden Bar, he also owned a thriving pub on Rutherglen Road. Number 91 Govan Street at the corner of Hospital Street was owned by Andrew McFarlane he also had pubs on Jamaica Street, City Centre and another pub at 359 Govan Street at the corner of South Wellington Street.

At 108 Govan Street at the corner of Thistle Street the owner of the pub was a gentleman called David Blanche. The last licensee was Mugnus O'Donnell, many will still remember this old pub as the Clady Bar.

Across the street at number 119 was Taylor's owned by Edward and Henry Taylor of Stevenson Taylor, Edward Taylor held the licence for these premises and another one for South Wellington Street while his brother Henry held certificates for the Bridge Street and Buchanan Street premises.

At number 153 Govan Street at the corner of Crown Street was McLean's extensive premises, McLean's owned property at Pollokshaws Road (Corona Bar) a pub on Crown Street and Main Street, Gorbals. At 185 Govan Street at Rose Street John Kemp was running a thriving pub, this pub became known as the Ballater Arms.

At 186 Govan Street Allan Gilmour traded for many years, this was the pub that John Adams took over in the 1950s and was called the Tavern, John went on to own the Riverside Tavern in Waddell Street. At 320 Govan Street at Commercial Road was the Commercial Bar owned by William Robin he also ran a pub on Nolfolk Street and Warwick Street.

358 Govan Street at South Wellington Street (Lawmoor Street) was Brechin's Bar, William Brechin jun. owned this pub along with a pub on Florence Street (The Moy) and a pub on Camden Street while his father also William held certificates for New City Road, Aikenhead Road two pubs on the Gallowgate. Mr Brechin jun. went on to own a pub on the Candleriggs (Granny Blacks)

359 Govan Street at the other corner of South Wellington Street was owned by Andrew McFarlane. Number 361 on the other corner of South Wellington Street was called the Clachan owned by Gilbert Reid. Mr Reid also ran pubs on Nelson Street and London Road.401 Govan Street at the corner of Matheson Street was owned by Craig Douglas Riddell who owned pub in the East End of the city including King Street, Calton, Clyde Place, Calton, Great Hamilton Street now London Road and Canning Street (London Road.)

422 Govan Street was at the corner of Waddell Street owned by wine & spirit merchant Allan Cameron, he also ran a pub on Cumberland Street, this old pub was the last to survive on Ballater Street Chatham's and was only demolished a few years ago to make way for the new Gorbals housing.

The last pub on Govan Street was at 429 owned by a lady called Margaret Kerr.
