Allan Gilmour never considered himself a Glaswegian as he was born in Pollokshaws which was not then part of Glasgow. His parents lived in Chappelfield, Renfrewshire, where his father managed a bleach works there. On leaving school young Allan gained his experience with his father, becoming foreman and then paymaster in the firm. Allan moved to Wigtown were he became Town Councillor and successfully carried on a wine & spirit business there for almost 10 years before coming to Glasgow. He then took over a small public house at 186 Govan Street, this street is now better known as Ballater Street on the Southside of the city in the famous Gorbals.
John Adams took over this pub in the 1950s and was called the Tavern, John went on to own the Riverside Tavern in Waddell Street.
This old pub dated back to the 1870s occupied by the Anderson family, Agnes Anderson sold the pub in 1900 to William H Power, the rent of the premises was them £65.00 per year. During the First World War the pub was sold to John McVey, he had public houses at 202 Gallowgate, some of the older generation will remember this old pub as the Green Cellar which sat at the corner of Ross Street, his other pub was at 477 Argyle Street.
