The Real truth about the Hurdy Gurdy

"What is, or was, a Hurdy Gurdy? There is a pub in Townhead with that name, and its motif is a barrel-organ.

In my young days in that district, a hurdy-gurdy was a circular tent, hand-winched, which came round the streets and we youngsters used to pay a half-penny for about a minute's merry-go-round."

A Hurdy-Gurdy was a hand-manipulated street organ, sometimes full-sized and sometimes a smaller affair on the top of a wee pole. In olden times some of them had a small monkey trained to operate the handle which attracted weans and adults alike.
