Virginia Street was opened in 1753, at the bottom of the street was a small house with a Malt Kiln and Barn and a "Kail Yard" behind, and all around were cornfields and vegetable gardens.

In nearby Virginia Place was a first class restaurant called the Victoria run by Mrs Semple from 1869 to 1887. After a long service here she sold the business to Mr Otto Bergner who was better known in the St. Enochs' Hotel.
