The Douglas & Clydesdale Hotel, Hamilton.

James Cameron.

Mr James Cameron was an ideal hotel keeper, a large and warm hearted Scotsman. Mr Cameron was born in Fife, Scotland. He ran a very prosperous hotel business called the Douglas & Clydesdale Hotel, which he ran since coming to Hamilton.

James Cameron Douglas & Clydesdale Hotel Hamilton

Mr James Cameron. 1895.

He soon got to know all the trade personalities and was entrusted to become a member of the Free Masons. His hotel became the hall and meeting place of the Freemasons connected with No.7 Kilwinning and Hamilton Masonic Lodge, No.233. In the later lodge he acted in the various offices, and finally was elected R.W.M., which position he held for several years, and later held office in the Provincial Grand Lodge of Scotland.

He was a member of the Cameron Clan Society and a great admirer of the kilt and plaid, which he occasionally dons with credit to his clan. Mr Cameron was of a retiring disposition, yet the success of the Douglas & Clydesdale Hotel was in no small measure due to his able management, combined with excellent assistance from his wife.

End.
